Kidepo in April

April is when Kidepo's single rainy season actually establishes: 134 mm over 11 days, more than five times March's rainfall, and the bush answers within a couple of weeks.

If you only want the answer

April trades concentrated game for green scenery and quiet, with Apoka's cheaper rate starting the same week as the rains do.

The rains establish

Averages move to 29.4°C by day and 19.1°C at night, with rain up to 134 mm across 11 days. The Kidepo Valley's sand river, dry since the previous season, starts running again after storms in the mountains, and the wilderness drive north from Apoka changes character along with it.

Game disperses off the Narus circuits as water reappears across the wider park, so a drive that would have been a sure thing in February becomes more of a search. Birds and newborns take over where predators-at-the-waterhole viewing left off.

What changes on the road

The UK Foreign Office's flood advisory for north-eastern Uganda covers March through May, and April sits in the middle of it, so ask your operator about current track conditions rather than assuming January's roads. Elephant herds, which range well outside the park boundary into Karamoja, are also part of a real human-wildlife conflict picture here, worth knowing if community visits are on your itinerary.

Ik visits on Mount Morungole and Karamojong manyatta walks near Kawalakol, Lorukul and Karenga both need advance arrangement regardless of season, so build them into your plan before you arrive rather than on the ground.

The one clear financial argument

Apoka Safari Lodge switches to its green-season rate of $880 per person on 1 April, down from $1,250, the single biggest lever anyone has over the cost of a Kidepo trip. Everywhere else, prices barely move with season since most properties do not publish seasonal rates at all.

Kidepo does not book out in April; if anything you may have entire circuits to yourself. One thing to check before you go: confirm your vehicle is a genuine 4x4 rather than a saloon for this month's tracks, and build slack into your schedule since a storm can slow a drive without warning.
