Month by month

Kidepo in May

May is the wettest month on Kidepo's thirty-year record, 173 mm over 14 days, and the park looks nothing like the dust and cracked mud of January.

If you only want the answer

May rewards patience over predictability: the heaviest rain of the year, thick green cover, and the lowest effective cost of any Kidepo month.

The wettest page of the year

The average reads 28.6°C by day, 18.4°C at night, and 173 mm of rain spread across 14 days, the highest rainfall total of any month here. Cooler days are one side effect worth packing for; the other is a landscape that has fully turned over from the January version.

With rain widespread, the Narus pools stop being the only game in town, and buffalo, giraffe and elephant scatter across a much larger area than the dry-season circuits cover. What you gain in scenery and solitude, you trade in the tight, repeatable sightings of the peak months.

Getting around in the wet

Sand and clay tracks that behave normally in January can be genuinely difficult in May, particularly on the approach roads and on the 30 km drive north to the Kidepo Valley. Confirm current conditions with UWA or your lodge before committing to a route, and consider flying into Apoka's airstrip rather than driving the last stretch if your schedule cannot absorb a delay.

This is also strong birding territory, with resident dry-country specials mixing with wet-season activity, so a guided walk at $25 per person is worth the outlay even when game drives are quieter than usual.

Value, and the honest trade-off

May sits inside Apoka's green-season rate of $880 per person, and it is arguably the cheapest month to be at Kidepo across the whole year once you weigh reduced demand against unchanged prices elsewhere. Nothing here books out in May; you could arrange a trip with a week's notice and be fine.

Build in slack: treat any single-day plan as provisional, and add a spare day to the itinerary rather than a tight connection, since a storm can turn a two-hour drive into a five-hour one.
