Flying to Kidepo: what Aerolink actually flies, and when it beats the road

Kidepo is 571 km from Kampala on the shortest road, about ten hours of driving each way, and that single number is what makes flying worth a serious look here more than at almost any other Uganda park. The Apoka airstrip sits beside the lodge and park headquarters, Aerolink flies there, and the real question is not whether you can fly but whether you should. Here is the schedule and fare picture as of 13 September 2026, checked directly against Aerolink's own site.

If you only want the answer

Aerolink has no scheduled Entebbe-Kidepo flight. Checked against Aerolink's own site on 13 September 2026, its page sitemap lists exactly six scheduled destinations and Kidepo is not one of them; its charter page instead describes landing "at airstrips that lie outside of our usual scheduled service flights," which is what a Kidepo booking actually is. Several tour and lodge sites repeat a Wednesday, Friday, Sunday timetable at $420 one way and $700 return, but we could not confirm that schedule or fare against Aerolink directly, and the site making the claim most confidently gives two different flight durations for the same route in the same piece of text, so treat any specific figure you read online as unverified until Aerolink or your lodge confirms it by phone. The comparison that actually matters: a charter runs roughly one to two hours in the air against two full days of driving each way. Fly if your trip is short, if you are booked into Apoka Safari Lodge, or if a lodge has arranged the transfer. Drive if your vehicle is the point of the trip, or if you are running the Karamoja circuit UWA itself recommends, up one way and back the other.

The scheduled flight myth, checked again

Ask several people how to fly to Kidepo and at least one will tell you Aerolink flies there on a set schedule. It is one of the most repeated claims in Uganda safari planning, our own July 2026 research already flagged it as false, and checking again from Aerolink's own site on 13 September 2026 changes nothing. The airline's page sitemap, last modified 9 September 2026, lists individual destination pages for exactly six parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale National Park, the Rwenzori Mountains and Jinja. There is no Kidepo destination page, and none appears anywhere else in that sitemap either.

Aerolink's own charter page describes the actual arrangement plainly: "our diverse fleet can handle groups of any size, and we customise our service to land at airstrips that lie outside of our usual scheduled service flights." Kidepo's Apoka airstrip is one of those airstrips. A charter, not a scheduled seat, is what Aerolink sells for this route, arranged through reservations on +256 317 333000 or info@aerolinkuganda.com.

The specific numbers you will find elsewhere, a Wednesday, Friday, Sunday timetable and a fare of $420 one way or $700 return, come from third-party tour and lodge sites, not from Aerolink. We could not verify either figure against Aerolink's own pages, and the site quoting them most confidently gives two different flight durations for the same Entebbe-Apoka route within the same piece of text, which is not the mark of a source to plan a booking around. Ring Aerolink directly before you build a trip around any fare you read online.

Chartering in: airstrips, baggage, and what UWA adds on top

Kidepo has two airstrips, per UWA's own materials: Apoka, right beside the lodge and park headquarters, and Lomej. Confirm with Aerolink which one your aircraft is using before you arrange a road pickup, since a transfer booked for Apoka will not help you at Lomej.

Aerolink's published baggage policy caps checked luggage at 15 kg in soft-sided bags, sized to 60 by 45 by 33 cm, with your hand luggage counted inside that same 15 kg rather than added on top. Go over and the airline charges $5 per kilo, on both domestic and international routes, at its own discretion, and a freight-seat option exists for genuinely bulky loads up to 75 kg. Pack for a light-aircraft allowance, not a checked-hold one.

UWA adds its own charges on landing, separate from Aerolink's fare: $30 to $40 per fixed-wing landing, and a pick-up from the Apoka airstrip at UGX 50,000, rising to UGX 100,000 if you are being collected from Karenga instead. No operator we found publishes a full charter fare for Entebbe to Kidepo. Charters are quoted per aircraft, not per seat, so the price is the same whether one passenger flies or five, and a solo traveller should expect a sole-use rate rather than a per-person figure. Get a written quote before you commit to anything.

The honest arithmetic: an hour or two in the air against two days on the road

The road figure is not in dispute: Kampala to Kidepo is 571 km on the shortest route, and UWA's own optimum time is about ten hours, which in practice most people split into two days each way with an overnight at Gulu, Kitgum or the Ziwa area, for four driving days out of any Kidepo trip that starts and ends in Kampala. A charter flight, even taking the unverified third-party duration claims at their widest, is measured in one to two hours, not two days.

That gap is the strongest case for flying to Kidepo of any park we cover. Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth are a long day's drive from Kampala; Kidepo is the better part of two. If your whole trip is five or six days, handing four of them to driving eats the visit rather than framing it, and that is when a charter, even an unquoted one, is worth a phone call to Aerolink before you commit to a road plan.

Who should drive anyway

  • Self-drivers with camping or banda gear: your 4x4 is the whole plan here, not just the transport, and there is no vehicle waiting at Apoka to replace it.
  • Anyone running the Karamoja circuit UWA itself suggests: drive up via Gulu and Kitgum, return through Kotido and Kaabong, or the reverse, and see the region rather than skip it.
  • Travellers combining Kidepo with Murchison Falls or a wider northern Uganda route, where the road time is doing double duty as sightseeing, not just transit.
  • Anyone renting a Ugandan-registered vehicle rather than bringing one in: the daily entry-fee gap alone, about $150 a day foreign-registered against roughly $8 Ugandan-registered, changes the maths in favour of hiring locally and driving.

Who should simply fly

  • Short trips, where two of your five or six days would otherwise vanish into driving alone.
  • Apoka Safari Lodge guests, the one property positioned to arrange a coordinated airstrip transfer and game-viewing programme without a vehicle of your own.
  • Anyone whose lodge or operator has already confirmed a charter and a ground transfer, since arriving without pre-arranged wheels at Apoka leaves you stranded in a park built around self-drive.
  • Multi-park fly-in circuits, where Kidepo is one stop among several and the vehicle-based northern Uganda road trip is not the point of the visit.
