December rewards timing more than any other month here: arrive early and you catch the tail of the quiet season, arrive after Christmas and you are already inside the peak.
One month, two seasons
The average for December sits at 28.7°C by day, 17.6°C at night, and 45 mm of rain over 7 days, the lowest rainfall of the run since September, though slightly more spread out than November's 6 rain days. Heat is building steadily, and by the back half of the month the Narus pools are doing the same job they will do at full intensity in January.
Visitor demand tells a different story than the weather does. December is thin through most of its length and then fills fast around the Christmas and New Year holidays, a pattern driven by travel calendars rather than by anything the park itself is doing.
On the ground
Game concentration on the Narus circuits is already noticeably tighter than it was in November, and by late December the difference from full peak conditions is more about crowd size than about what you will actually see. Elephant, buffalo and giraffe sightings are trending toward the near-certain odds that define January and February.
The Kidepo Valley drive north is normally dry and open again by this point, and the borassus-palm riverbed walk is back on the table for anyone wanting the scenery half of the park as well as the game half.
Booking around the holiday spike
Apoka Safari Lodge shifts into its $1,250 high-season rate for this window, and the holiday fortnight specifically is the one stretch of the Kidepo year where booking ahead genuinely matters, not because the whole park sells out, but because the handful of properties near Christmas and New Year fill from a smaller pool of travellers than usual.
If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December give you nearly the game viewing of the true peak with none of its holiday pricing or its holiday crowd.
