Kidepo has a genuine community stake: 20 per cent of all park fees is shared with the parishes on the park boundary, worth UGX 400 million in UWA's last reported year. The Karamojong manyattas at Kawalakol, Lorukul and Karenga sell some of Uganda's most sought-after crafts, and a guide from the villages will get you further into that than any lodge programme. Look for the green badges if you want your money to stay in Karamoja. We are actively looking for more Ugandan-owned places to list here, so tell us if we have missed one.
Luxury canvas-walled chalets · Rocky outcrop above the Narus Valley, beside Apoka
The famous one, and the only full-service lodge inside Kidepo. Ten enormous canvas-walled chalets sit on a rock outcrop with the Narus Valley game viewing below, and the rock-hewn pool and outdoor stone tubs are the photographs everyone has seen. It is one of the most remote luxury lodges in East Africa, priced accordingly, and it is the only Kidepo property with a proper published rate card.
Self-catering bandas and guesthouse · At Apoka park headquarters, Narus Valley
The budget way to sleep inside Kidepo: government-owned bandas at Apoka headquarters, now refurbished and run under concession by Footprints Safaris. It is self-catering with no restaurant and no mains power, so bring everything you need. What it lacks in comfort it makes up in position, in the middle of the Narus Valley game country with rangers and guides on your doorstep.
Campsites, bring your own gear · Narus Valley game circuits
The cheapest legitimate way to sleep inside Kidepo: UWA's own campsites on the Narus game circuits. Kakine's binocular viewpoint takes in the Napore-Nyungea range, the Morungule mountains and Mount Lomej in one sweep. Facilities are basic but real, with shelter, water, pit latrines and firewood at the public sites. Bring everything else, and book through UWA reservations.
The largest property at Kidepo, hand-built by local craftsmen on the park edge, with twenty en-suite rooms, gardens and even a conference hall. It aims at the upmarket group and workshop trade as much as safari-goers. No rates are published, so enquire directly and compare against Apoka before assuming it is cheaper.
Lodge with rooms and a two-bedroom suite · Loitanit, on the Kidepo to Gulu road, 18 km from the park
Eighteen kilometres from the park on the Kidepo to Gulu road, which makes it a staging post rather than a base for dawn drives. Rooms have their own bathrooms and a seating area, there is a restaurant, a bar, a garden and a terrace, and the two-bedroom suite sleeps four, which is unusual here. It also runs an airport shuttle, so it is one of the few options if you are arriving without a vehicle. Ugandan owned and new enough to have no reviews yet.
Tented camp, two tiers · 500 m from Kalokudo Gate, south-western boundary
The sensible mid-market choice, and one of only two Kidepo properties that publishes its prices. Two tiers under one management: simple budget tents from about $40 and deck-mounted safari tents with bathrooms from about $110. It sits just outside the gate on the south-western boundary, which keeps costs down while the big valley views stay.
Eco-lodge on a 24-acre estate · 1 km from Kalokudo main gate
A Ugandan-owned eco-lodge a kilometre from the Kalokudo gate, built with timber from its own plantations on a 24-acre estate. The style is homegrown rather than international: a coffee ceremony, a sundowner rock, and outreach work with the Ik community in the Morungole mountains. No rates are published, so enquire directly.
Tented safari cabins · Community conservancy on the park edge, 20 minutes from Nataba gate, Karenga District
Named with the Karamojong word for a woman born in the wilderness, and the first community lodge on this side of Kidepo. Ten tented cabins with private verandas sit on more than thirty acres of conservancy twenty minutes from the Nataba gate, with wildlife moving freely between them and the park. The main lodge has a restaurant and bar looking out over the savanna. What sets it apart is not the tents but the arrangement behind them: a tenth of every bed night goes into a fund held by the Karenga and KKAAKKA Community Wildlife Associations, which decide together what it pays for, from schooling to health to conservation. Reach it on the road between Karenga and the Nataba gate, not on the park boundary road.
Rustic tents and cabanas · Southern park boundary, between the Katurum and Nataba gates
A small owner-run camp on the southern boundary, long established enough to appear on UWA's official park map. Tents and cabanas stand on raised thatched platforms looking across the Narus Valley to Mount Morungole. It publishes no rates and has no live website, which tells you something about how Kidepo works: book by phone or let a Ugandan operator arrange it.
All-suite cottages · Plot 104, Kalokudo village, on the north-western boundary near the South Sudan frontier
A small Ugandan-owned lodge of five all-suite cottages on twelve acres of Karamoja grassland, out on the north-western boundary where the park runs up against the frontier. Run all-inclusive, with a restaurant and bar, and the activity list leans as much on culture as on game: village visits with the Karamojong and time with the IK on Morungole, alongside drives and bush walks. It rates 4.6 from fourteen traveller reviews. We list it because it is here and Ugandan-owned, not because we have been able to verify much about it.

Rates gathered July 2026 from operators' own published rate cards where they exist. Kidepo is unusual: nine of the eleven properties we found publish no prices at all, and several widely-listed lodges could not be verified as operating. Where we show no price, none is published; always confirm directly. Buffalo Base Guesthouse and Campsite in Karenga village was on this list until July 2026. A contact on the ground reports it closed at the start of the year. We could not reach the property to confirm, so we have taken it off rather than send anyone eight kilometres to a locked gate. NAMONI Lodge, Zebra Safari Lodge and Katurum Kidepo Lodge were added on 28 July 2026 after a reader pointed out we had missed them. All three are Ugandan owned. NAMONI's entry comes from the lodge's own 2026-27 brochure. The other two publish nothing themselves, so their entries come from booking platforms, which we say plainly because it is a weaker source than we normally use.
Facilities and activities come from each property's own website, read in July 2026. We only record what that property's own page states. Where a site was unreachable, or returned a page that did not identify the property, we leave the entry blank rather than guessing, so a blank means unchecked and not absent. Filtering on a facility shows only what we confirmed, and tells you how many places we could not check.
