What a visit to Kidepo actually costs

Two of you, a hired 4x4, three nights camping at a public UWA site inside the park: about $610 all-in at 2026 rates. That is the trip most self-drivers actually take, and this page shows where every dollar of it goes, then prices the same three nights at Kidepo Savannah Lodge on the boundary and at Apoka Safari Lodge, the only full-service lodge inside the park, for the fly-in traveller.

If you only want the answer

For two people self-driving a hired 4x4 and camping three nights at one of UWA's public campsites, budget about $610 at 2026 rates: $240 in park entrance, about $24 in vehicle fees, $30 in self-drive game viewing fees, roughly $64 in camping (a rate quoted only in shillings, so treat it as an estimate), and about $250 in diesel for the round trip from Kampala plus your game drives. The same three nights run to about $1,205 at Kidepo Savannah Lodge on the park boundary, room-only, and about $7,740 at Apoka Safari Lodge inside the park in high season, before you have even found out what the charter flight costs.

Budget one: self-drive camping, the trip most people take

About $610 for two people over three nights, and here is where it goes. Park entrance runs at Uganda Wildlife Authority's foreign non-resident rate of $40 per person for each 24-hour ticket, the top tier since Kidepo is a Category A park. We count three fee-days for a three-night stay; time your entry and exit close to the same hour of day and that holds, arrive or leave later and the gate may bill a fourth day.

The vehicle line assumes what almost every self-driver actually does: hires a Ugandan-registered 4x4 in Kampala rather than bringing a foreign-plated one across the border. That vehicle pays UGX 30,000 per day, about $8, against $150 a day for a foreign-registered equivalent, a gap of roughly nineteen times. Self-driving your own game viewing without a UWA ranger guide costs a further $10 per vehicle per day, not per person.

Camping uses the Category C public sites at Kakine and Nagusokopire, the ones most self-drivers use. UWA's own tariff quotes these only in Ugandan shillings, UGX 40,000 per person per night, and never states whether that is genuinely what foreign visitors pay or a domestic figure. We convert it here at roughly UGX 3,780 to the dollar, the rate implied by GlobalPetrolPrices' fuel quote on 7 September 2026, which puts it at about $10.60 per person per night, but confirm the real figure with UWA before you rely on it.

UWA's tariff does not say what, if anything, the Category C shilling rate includes, and there is no published child rate anywhere on the sheet. Food, drinking water and your own transport to Kampala to start the trip are yours on top; Kidepo has no shops of any size near the gates.

Budget two: a mid-range stay at Kidepo Savannah Lodge

About $1,205 for two people over three nights. Kidepo Savannah Lodge, five hundred metres from Kalokudo Gate on the south-western boundary, is one of only two Kidepo properties that publishes real prices, and its self-contained safari tents on raised decks start at $110 per person per night, room-only, on its 2026 rate card. Because the lodge sits outside the park, you still drive yourself in for game viewing and still pay the same entrance, vehicle and self-drive fees as the camping budget.

The lodge's own budget tents, from about $40 per person per night, would cut the accommodation line by more than half if two of you are happy to trade the deck and en-suite bathroom for something simpler. Either tier is room-only, so meals, drinks and any lodge-run activities are additional and not published here.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge's budget tents share the same site and the same drive, so the entrance, vehicle and fuel lines do not change if you trade down; only the accommodation line falls, to roughly $240 for two people over three nights.

Budget three: fly-in and top-end

About $7,740 for two people over three nights, before flights, built on Apoka Safari Lodge, the only full-service lodge inside the park and the sole Kidepo property with a proper published rate card. High season, October to March, runs $1,250 per person sharing, all-inclusive; the same room drops to $880 in the April to September green season, which is where the 2026 rate card still sits this month. Either figure is only published through 30 June 2026 on WildPlaces Africa's rate sheet, so a stay booked for later in the year may run on a fresh, unpublished rate.

All-inclusive at Apoka is not stated to cover the government park entrance fee, which is a separate line at every Uganda park regardless of where you sleep, so we add it here: $40 per person per 24 hours. Because the lodge holds a UWA concession, its own game-drive vehicles pay the vehicle fee once per trip rather than daily, and that is the lodge's cost to carry, not yours to add.

What is missing from this total is the flight itself, and nobody publishes what it costs. Kidepo has no scheduled air service: Aerolink's own destinations page names six parks, and Kidepo is not one of them, confirmed again in September 2026. Several booking sites quote a one-way fare near $420 and a return near $700, but that figure matches nothing on Aerolink's current site and may describe a route or season that no longer runs. Treat it as unverified, and get a written charter quote from Aerolink (+256 317 333000 or info@aerolinkuganda.com) before you budget the flight.

The green-season rate of $880 per person, available April to September, brings the lodge line to $5,280 and the three-night total before flights to about $5,520. UWA's landing fee of $30 to $40 per fixed-wing landing is normally the charter operator's cost to fold into the fare, not a separate charge to you, so it is not added here.

The fuel maths, dated

Diesel in Uganda is not price-controlled; retailers set their own pump price. Two trackers checked on 13 September 2026 put it close together: GlobalPetrolPrices had diesel at UGX 6,647 per litre on 7 September 2026, about $1.76 at the exchange rate its own dollar figure implies, and DailyFuels had it at UGX 6,567 per litre on 13 September 2026. We use roughly UGX 6,600, about $1.75, per litre.

The self-drive budgets above assume the standard route: 571 km each way between Kampala and Kidepo via Karuma, Gulu and Kitgum, so 1,142 km for the round trip, plus roughly 150 km of driving on the compact Narus Valley circuits over three days of game viewing, for about 1,292 km total. A loaded diesel 4x4 running mostly tarmac with a stretch of murram and park track should manage around 11 litres per 100 km, which is about 142 litres, or roughly $250 at the September 2026 price. There is no fuel for sale anywhere inside Kidepo, and it is scarce across Karamoja generally, so fill up in Kitgum or Kotido and carry more than you think you will need.

Paying at the gate

Kidepo runs on a cashless system now, a genuine change from the cash-only reputation Uganda's parks used to have. UWA's current tariff lists mobile money, MTN MoMo and Airtel Money, card machines at the gate, bank transfer and an online portal as accepted methods; older advice about carrying dollars in cash is out of date.

Since 1 March 2026, UWA has required full payment at the time of booking, and the old seven-day reservation window before payment was due has been suspended. Book through reservations@wildlife.go.ug or the toll-free line 0800 100 960; UWA's own online booking pages were not functioning when this was last checked, so email remains the reliable route. Twenty per cent of every fee you pay is shared with the parishes on Kidepo's boundary, which in UWA's last reported year came to UGX 400 million across the surrounding communities.

Where the money surprises people

Vehicle entry is the single biggest lever you control: a Ugandan-registered 4x4 pays UGX 30,000 a day, about $8, while a foreign-registered one pays $150 a day, a roughly nineteen-fold gap. Hire locally instead of driving your own vehicle across the border and you save well over $400 on a three-night visit.
Entrance tickets run on 24-hour blocks from the moment you pass the gate, not calendar days. Time your arrival and departure well and three nights bills as three fee-days; get the timing wrong and a fourth day gets added.
The Category C public campsites, Kakine and Nagusokopire, quote their rate only in Ugandan shillings, UGX 40,000 per person per night, and UWA's own tariff never confirms that this is what foreign visitors actually pay. Do not assume the roughly $10.60-a-night conversion is the real figure.
Self-driving your own game viewing costs $10 per vehicle per day, not per person, while a guided drive with a UWA ranger costs $20 per guide, also not per person. Either way a couple splits one fee, so a fuller vehicle makes both options cheaper per head.
There is no fuel for sale anywhere inside Kidepo, and clean fuel is scarce across Karamoja generally. Fill up in Kitgum or Kotido on the way in and budget for the whole round trip; running short out here means a very long walk.
Nobody publishes what a charter flight to Apoka costs. Aerolink's own site lists no scheduled Kidepo route, despite what several booking sites imply with confident-looking fares, so budget for an unknown and get a written quote before you commit to flying.
Off-track driving carries a $150-per-person fine, charged to the driver, and littering or hooting costs UGX 100,000. Keep every receipt until you are back out the gate.
